Seth McCay

CS major turned tuba player turned music teacher turned designer turned product builder, now based in New York City. I design book campaigns at HarperCollins and ship production web apps on the side.

I started at Auburn as a computer science major. Spent three years in CS before switching to music education on a tuba scholarship. Did a semester at LSU studying music performance, then taught orchestra to 200 kids across three campuses in Dallas. Moved to New York to teach music technology. Taught myself design along the way and eventually made the switch full-time.

Now I'm a Senior Designer at HarperCollins, designing marketing campaigns for the Morrow Group (William Morrow, Avon, Harper Voyager). 490+ completed projects across 280+ titles. I also still design concert branding for DCINY as a contractor, which I've been doing since 2018. 100+ concerts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center so far.

Outside of the day job, I design and ship real products. Grindset is a live app with paying subscribers, and ColdSnap is a field service platform for HVAC techs. I handle strategy, UI design, and AI-assisted development, and every one of these is a real product that real people use.

What I care about most is designing interfaces that feel like an extension of the user's brain, where you just pick it up and it works without a learning curve.
